Current Mood: what if?
We just passed Armed Forces Day, and it's almost Memorial Day. In addition to several new relatives (that officially became a part of my family when I married Jenny last July) that currently or have served in the military, I'm proud to say my little brother is an enlisted Airman in the United States Air Force. I've been told it's not cool to post specifics about his service, so I'll just say he joined this year, he's been in Texas (I got to see him recently for the first time since he left), and he's in contracting (not a contractor, per se, he doesn't hang drywall, but he's more about the paperwork).
At some point he'll be leaving for a far away place to do Air Force things. He's always been a few hours drive away from me, so having to think of Skype as the easiest way to see him isn't easy to get used to. It will definitely shake up our family holidays (like we haven't had enough of that!) and I think my mom's taking it the hardest (like I said, totally allowed). I think he'll enjoy it, though, and I wish him all the best.
Bradley's now an Airman. My friend Brant just joined the Army. Another friend (Benji) almost joined several branches. It makes me think about how at one point, I almost joined ROTC to help pay for college, and how differently my life would have turned out.
Even beyond that, though, there's a deeper significance I put on being in the military, and I wish I could tell you it was purely a noble, self-sacrificing, guarding your country and fellow man kind of thing. Really, it's a pretty stereotypical guy kinda thing.
Ugh. I know I'm not going to explain this well.
Let me back up. Growing up, I sometimes felt jealous of other people who had a strong sense of identity. They played sports and loved their team/school (I did not - at least not until I got Purdue, I think that's part of why I love this school so much). They had some sort of ethnic heritage and celebrated unique holidays (I did not). They were religious and had special ceremonies (I did not). They had groups to belong to and rites to go with them. Basically, growing up, it seems like boys around me had plenty of opportunities to "prove" themselves to be Men with a capital M. I'm talking about Eagle Scouts, Bar Mitzvahs, Mission Calls, stuff like that. Some sort of rite of passage they took on to emerge on the other side as...I dunno, as adults, as men. They were confirmed, they were sports guys, they went hunting with their dads... something they could point to as accomplishment.
The military? Well, that's definitely one of those things. I consider that one of the oldest and truest tests of self, of confidence, of courage, and of manliness. I dunno, it's strange - I never really want to be in combat, to fear for my life, to have to risk everything, to have to possibly take another person's life - and yet, I wonder if I would ever have what it takes. Does that make any sense? On some level, I wonder if I could do it, if I could stand up and face that.
Mom suggested my back surgery as a test that I passed, and I shot it down - I didn't pick that. That experience was something that happened to me and I dealt with it the best I could (still do, even). Getting married and being a husband didn't make me feel like any more of a Man. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife and I will do my best to provide for her and take care of her, but most days it feels just like when we were engaged (or dating)...and honestly, she's the one who provides for us right now.
I dunno, maybe this all comes back to feeling like I'm never going to be done with school. I never finished engineering - I never got the diploma or the ring. I don't feel like an engineer. I never finished my flight lessons. I don't feel like a pilot. I don't have my A&P [yet]. I don't feel like a mechanic.
Some days, I wonder what to call myself. UGH, that sounded so stupid.

Current Mood: removed from the bubble
Another semester finished (around the first week of May) at Purdue, which means I am down to just 2 semesters. One more school year. My "senior" year, for real. One last summer break (during which I am happy to be busy with my internship!), one last set of holidays, one last winter break, one last spring break - the familiar school routine I've had since grade school. Only 2 more sets of finals!
I learned a ton of new stuff. I'm really glad I took my extra 490 classes - I gained some unique experience doing hangar maintenance, as well as some confidence doing hands-on work in my field. My fuels class really let me gain a rapport with one of my professors, and I learned some things about the industry that are outside the books, stuff they don't test you on but I feel like helps me understand the big picture. I even managed to get my best grade in electronics yet, which has always been a struggle for me.
My senior year will be somewhat front loaded, with something like 18 credit hours in the fall and probably about 13 in the spring - I wanted to try and take Air Traffic Control classes, but my schedule would not allow it. This includes senior design (both semesters), which I've heard horror stories of in terms of time commitment. I'd like to balance that out a little, but hopefully this way I can spend more time (especially in the spring) on job searching (and A&P prep)! That's right, honest to goodness, college graduate, real world, time to be an adult and look for gainful employment job searching. I can't wait!
After 8 years of Purdue (with one more to go), it's time for me to fly. I have to trust that just like retiring from the Ship of Fools, this is the right move. There's definitely part of me that's somewhat institutionalized - I love Purdue, and I love knowing exactly where everything is, where to go and who to talk to for anything I need or want, knowing where the best food is, the quickest routes, stuff like that. Feeling like a king around campus, because I have insider knowledge and my finger on the pulse of what's important. I have family and friends close by, we have an awesome apartment filled with all of my favorite things - why would I go anyplace else?
Of course, if I go someplace new, I'm sure I can recapture those feelings - it just takes time and effort. And let's be realistic, when I finally graduate, more than likely we will be moving. Most of the jobs in my field are in Washington, California, Texas (ugh), Florida, DC, places like that. As awful as it would be for J to leave her school that she loves and fought so hard to get, the reality is that she'll have an easier time finding a school near my job than vice versa. I'm not opposed to staying here - if I could find something, or somebody would pay for my grad school, sure, I'm just not sure how plausible that scenario is.
That all said, I'm feeling surprisingly optimistic about the job search (ask me again in a year, haha). I'm doing very well with my new major, especially grades wise. My cumulative grades (including that debacle half decade in engineering) have finally been pulled, kicking and screaming, to the floor of acceptable. My major GPA is rockin'. My professors like me and know me (one of my professors asked me in March if I had anything lined up for the summer, and when I told him my internship was pending, he told me if it didn't work out he'd "find something for me"). I see my professors in the hall and they say hi to me, and they know my name, which is a great feeling. Something I didn't even consider when I switched to this smaller program, but definitely something I like.
Some of my classmates have gotten internships at some places I'd love to work (Lockheed, Rolls Royce, Gulfstream, etc.). So it can definitely be done! I just have to buckle down, put my head down and power through. One more year of classes, books, and exams. One last year to do all the Purdue stuff I've put off (not that much), and then graduate. Oh, and take my A&P test *shudder*. Plus, I have got to stop paying for school and start paying down loans. That's...that's all I'm going to talk about that subject for now.
This May has been so weird. Seniors in my major are leaving, and I had just started to feel like I was getting to know them. Now I'm going to be those seniors. Another group of people (all majors, lots from the improv club and Ship of Fools, little siblings of people I started college with) graduating, some of which started schools years after I did, and now I've watched the grow up and now it's time to say goodbye. I'm extremely proud of them and happy for them, but there's a tiny bit that stings. Something about seeing them come and go, instead of being the one leaving. Seeing Facebook blow up with statuses and pictures of caps and gowns and sappy goodbyes. I have plenty of great stuff to take from my time at Purdue already, and I'm sure I will look back on my time here fondly, but right now I see a lot of frustration, wasted time and opportunity, and spinning wheels on my part. Never, never thought I'd be one of those old guy students who spent more than 4 (even 5) years to finish his undergrad degree.
UGH. Gotta push those stupid feelings away and get down to business.

MAN school caught up with me quick.
I'll spare you all the play-by-play of each day, but here's the summary:
MA 266 (differential equations) - again
AAE 301 (signals and systems analysis)
AAE 352 (structures II)
AAE 352 lab
CGT 226 (computer modeling - part modeling and advanced surface design)
13 credit hours.
Same old, same old, really. Difficult classes, I feel like I'm in over my head, the math involved blows my mind. I feel really...sluggish getting used to the routine, the workload, etc. Not crazy about trying to pass DE again, but what am I gonna do? Worried about student loans. Of course it wouldn't be a semester at Purdue for Ryan without problems with scheduling, registration, and student loan acceptance. a;sljdf;aljdf
On a scale of 1-1o, with 1 being Ferris Bueller's Day Off and 10 being Alexander's Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, my schedule looks like:
Monday: 6
Tuesday: 4
Wednesday: 9 (5 classes spanning 7:30am to 5:30pm)
Thursday: 2
Friday: 7
A lot of my aero professors are downright crazy, but it's balanced by a generous amount of oh my god these guys are so smart. I also regret letting all my knowledge of CATIA atrophy over several years since CGT 163.
New apartment is nice, even though I kinda hate trekking up Chauncey Hill. Especially 3x a week at 7 in the morning. I am not used to early classes like this!
Improv is good. I've already seen a lot of familiar old faces, and it looks like we've got a good recruiting class, which couldn't come at a better time for us.
Several job fairs are coming up next week and I suppose it's high time for me to buckle down and try to seriously get myself out there and find some sort of internship for next year. If nothing else I do not want to work for university residences again (not that it is a bad job, I just don't think I can do it again). Side thought...the longest I've had any job so far was about 3 years and each time I started to get pretty stir crazy. I hope that if/when I get into my preferred "field"I will be more content and won't feel the need to jump around so much.
Lastly, Andy Ober gave Jenny and I some last minute freebies to go see another preseason game - Bengals @ Colts a week ago. So we got to see Lucas Oil Stadium up close and personal, and the Bengals won (something I am worried about not celebrating a lot in the coming months). That said, my new favorite Bengal is Corey Lynch - not just because he makes a great impact on our D, but he's also a rookie from Appalachian State. Which means he was part of the David team that brought down Michigan last year at the Big House, apparently starting a tradition.
:D Football season!

Quickly! Write about football before the weekend gets here!
Surprise, surprise. Purdue lost to Penn St., 26-19. Not much to say here...Purdue fails against tough teams, we're already bowl eligible. Curtis Painter had his first game this season without a TD, which dropped him a few places - he's now barely in the top 30 in NCAAF QBs. Purdue is 3-3 Big Ten, 7-3 all facing Michigan St. Spartans (1-5, 5-5) next in our last home game.
Won again in Fantasy Football, moving to 5-4 and a three way tie for second. I face Jenny this week, and the projections put us with 10 points of each other. Just three more weeks until our playoffs.
Donovan McNabb (Eagles QB) said the road to the NFC East championship still runs through Philadelphia. Well, tell that to Tony Romo and co. who rolled their way over the Eagles 38-17 on Sunday night. Eagles coach Andy Reid has come under fire for having a drug magnate son, more controversy coming from the disparity between his [lack of] punishment and Michael Vick. I say that's because kids don't idolize a fat walrus looking man who who screams from the sidelines. Coming up for the Cowboys: a tough division road game against the 6-2 Giants
Colts blew a 10 point lead at home in the 4th quarter, losing 24-20 to the Patriots. Come on! Maybe if the Colts could draw double and triple coverage with [absent] Marvin Harrison, like the Patriots did with Randy Moss, we'd see a different outcome. As it is, I'm thinking New England might go 16-0.
Browns beat the Seahawks 33-30 in overtime, whaaat? Whatever, just don't make me watch the Bengals lose to Brady Quinn at the helm of Cleveland. Fun fact: the Seahawks, now 4-4 having dropped 3 of the last 5, still lead the NFC West by a game. What a pushover division.
Not a big fan of LaDanian Tomlinson, so I'm glad Adrian Peterson beat the Chargers 35-17. Oh, I guess there were some other Vikings there, too.
Lions over Broncos, 44-7? WHAT?
The Saints breezed past the Jags, 41-24. Let me tell you, I am really really amazed at Drew Brees turning things around. New Orleans is now at .500, winning 4 straight after going 0-4. Here are the numbers, folks: "Since starting 0-4, Drew Brees' numbers are through the roof. Over the last four games, he's got a 115.1 quarterback rating, completing over 71 percent of his passes for 1,246 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception." - Yahoo Sports. They play the winless Rams (0-8) next.
Brett Favre is keeping up with Romo, and the Packers cruise to 7-1 over the Chiefs in a 33-22 win. Number 4 joins Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as the only QBs to have beaten 31 teams. I hope they keep things up against the 3-5 Vikings this week. It looks like the rest of November is where the NFC plays out.
Lastly, the heartbreakers, my Cincinnati Bengals. Lost 33-21 to the Bills (I can't even name a single the Bills player - can you?). Bengals move to 2-6, with one of the worst three defenses in the league. Our star receiver Chad Johnson hurt his neck and is questionable going into this week's game. Given Chad's numbers (2nd best receiver in the NFL behind Patriot's Randy Moss) and TJ's consistency (8 straight games with a TD), and the awesomeness that is Carson Palmer (some think he's the 3rd best NFL QB right now) - WHY are things so terrible? Yes, our defense is falling apart. Yes, over a dozen Bengals players have had legal problems in the past year. It just feels like the AFC North is fucked to hell right now, with the Steelers and the Browns of all teams, dominating. Even the Ravens (4-4) make us look bad, and we play them this week. It's on the road...a place we haven't won at yet this year.

TWO weeks of (almost entirely) football stuff!
Last week:
Oh wow I was so close to starting this with a string of cuss words, you have no idea.
First, the Bengals got manhandled by the Patriots. Yeah, whatever, I already wrote about how I wasn't exactly surprised by it.
Then, this weekend, the game I was totally pumped for - the Purdue/OSU game - was a bust. Okay, I went and had a great time, had pretty good seats with Future Roommates Greg and Chad, and even ended up sitting in front of fellow OSU fan Jamie. But our much touted #1-in-the-Big-Ten offense, averaging 40+ points per game, QB with about 16 TDs and only a few picks, outscoring opponents in the first half something like 100-3, 5-0 with consecutive 300+ yards of offense games - DIDN'T FUCKING SHOW UP against OSU. Now, like the Patriots in the MNF game, OSU really was favored to win. They were ranked in the top 5, we'd just barely sneaked into the top 25 at 23. It wasn't a shock or anything, and I wasn't really upset that we lost (I still want OSU to do well), but we didn't score anything - none points - until the last few minutes of the game against their second string. It was retarded. Our defense was actually trying to keep us in the game (wtf?) but kept coming up with turnovers in their redzone...not exactly the best field position, especially when Painter looked to only have about 30 yards per drive in him. The punting - a school record 12 times - was abysmal. Looked like we had some sort of punting palsy. I always feel like blaming the officials is such a "losers" comment, but there were a few calls I didn't care for. Even the halftime show was disappointing because they played to the wrong side of the field! At least our student section looked decent. Pretty much everybody wore black. Instead of being a Debbie Downer about OSU, I will really hope we beat Michigan this week because I hate them. Not only would they lose, we'd get back to the Ws (and be bowl eligible). A win-win, or "doublewin", if you will.
So I put away my fan towel and Boiler helmet and prepared for the Packers to roll over the injury ridden Bears on Sunday night. Not so. After a stunning first half (Brett had a QB rating over 130, over 150 yards of offense, a Green Bay running game that came from NOWHERE - 64 yards opening drive when the season average/game was about 50), the Packers gave up a 10 point lead slowly in the back half, like a dying animal. I mean, they were hemorrhaging plays and Brett ended up getting the all time interceptions record.
I went into this week's Monday Night Football hoping that 1 of 4 games would be a win, and that my boy Tony Romo wouldn't disappoint. The Cowboys were 4-0, were favored by everybody to stomp on the Bills, and the Cowboys D were giving up less points each week. Hell, Romo had 300+ yards in every game and only thrown 3 interceptions.
Yet, surprisingly, the Bills were nothing if not tenacious. After waiting 13 years to be on MNF, they were at the very least keeping pace with the Cowboys, at times looking like the stronger team. Romo was intercepted twice on his first two pass attempts. He would later fumble, and then be picked off Three. More. Times. The only reason I skipped the cussing at the onset of this post was because of two things:
1. Excellent (and I do mean excellent) play calling, coaching, clock management on the part of the Cowboys coaches in the last few minutes of the game
2. Mostly because of their kicker Nick Folk, who made not one but two career-length field goals in literally the last few seconds of the game.
Considering what a by-the-book blowout this was supposed to be, it was a strangely entertaining and exciting football game for Monday night, and I'm really happy Dallas came away with the win, despite Tony Romo's 5 attempts to be Brett Favre. This would set us up for an excellent matchup of the undefeated Patriots vs. the (barely) undefeated Cowboys the next week on Sunday.
Drew Brees...c'mon buddy. Give Purdue something to be proud of!
The last minute heroics even kept me from being upset over my fantasy football loss to Jenny by less than 3 points, leaving me tied for 4th with her at 2-3.
Oh, and the Yankees were forced out of the playoffs (by the Indians, for the record, but it could've been by the country of Poland, for all I care). Awesome.
This week:
Purdue lost to Michigan 48-21 in what is nicely called a blowout. Can't say I'm surprised (sounding like a trend yet?), but I'm wondering what I can do to fix this feeling. Like, can Purdue have a shitty season opener and then surprise everybody by winning their last 8 games? I'm sick of "settling" for bowl games. Yeah, 8 bowls in 9 years is nice, but I'm sick of being consistently below the top tier Big Ten teams like OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin. Fuck, even our Bucket game vs. IU is no longer looking safe. Eh, at least maybe this "crazy year of college football" (crazy in that the BCS keeps changing, and top teams keep falling in upsets) means we have a chance - heads down, work hard, and let the chips fall where they will. For my money, I still contend that Appalachian State's victory over Michigan was a greater upset than Stanford over (then) #2 USC because Stanford is at least in the same division, even if they are considered perennial floor mats in their conference (I don't care about your 40 point difference). Besides, even if Michigan lost to Oregon the week after Ap. St., they certainly turned their shit around, much to Purdue's dismay.
It feels odd that college football is about half over. And the NFL?
Bengals lost again 27-20 to the lower-middle-class Kansas City Chiefs. I try not to really put much stock in historical trends, but the Bengals have apparently been pretty good off the bye week - not that it made any fucking difference this year. T.J. had a great game (good for my fantasy team), but Carson Palmer has been intercepted twice each of his past four games. We have other receivers, but the QB needs to get it done. That, and our entire defense.
Green Bay had a slugfest with "that other indian team" (Jenny and I kept confusing the Chiefs who played the Bengals with the Redskins who went up against the Pack), coming away with a 17-14 win. Favre is officially the NFL's most intercepted QB, but that happens when you play forever, moreso as a gutsy gunslinger which I truly think he is. Key play was Woodson's interception for a TD.
THE SAINTS FINALLY WON over the Seattle Seahawks, 28-17 on Sunday night. That is such an important event that it gets an entire sentence hyperlinked. Reggie Bush was dynamite (again, yay fantasy football) and Brees showed everbody what Purdue does...well, not "best", but "acceptably", and it's about damn time, too. Seahawks didn't play so hot to be sure, but the Saints are no longer winless (something the poor Dolphins won't change against the Patriots next week - owww).
The only other game I cared to watch this weekend was the Clash of the Unbeatens - Patriots vs. Cowboys. Now, it should definitely be noted that Tony Romo was awesome and threw for only one interception, but it wasn't enough to win. Cowboys lost to who are quickly becoming the Yankees of the NFL, the Patriots, 48-27. Not much to say here...Cowboys led for a bit in the third, but Tom Brady is breaking records like "6 consecutive games with at least 3 TDs" and other stuff like that. All the Patriots at the post-press-conference act all humble and act like they have not played well, but it's pretty hard to believe them. Now I place my best hopes that they'll be defeated by things like injuries, the other two thirds of the season, and the Indianapolis Colts in a few weeks.
Wrapping things up, I think I'm starting to get the hang of this fantasy football thing. I don't want to be accused of hubris (especially against a league half filled with people who aren't really paying much attention to their teams), but I had a decisive victory this week. It was 123.6 to about 43 vs. the Zombies - I say "about" because the only player on either team playing is Eli Manning, still gaining a few meager points as he wraps up a win against the Falcons as I type on Monday Night Football. Unless Manning somehow breaks football as we know it and scores 80 fantasy points in the next 10 minutes, I've got this one wrapped up ("you gotta lock that down"). I'm now tied for 2nd place at .500 (I'm so excited to be so...mediocre? I guess .500 is bigger in football than, say, on a test), and we're about halfway through the regular fantasy season. I'm already excited for next year's draft!
Finally, as a special treat anybody who has read this far, or had the presence of mind to skip to the end for the summary, please watch this video around 1:25.

10.03.2007
no longer a backup, pt. 2
Current Mood: still recovering
What would (have) make me feel better after my craptacular blood donation Monday afternoon?
An upset win Bengals over the Patriots on Monday Night Football.
It was not to be, however, as the Bengals got embarrassed losing 34-13 to Tom Brady and his merry men. As much as I am rooting for the Bengals these days, can't say I didn't expect it. Reasons? Let me list some:
* Every commentator on ESPN picked the Patriots. Not that they are very good at predicting winners, but there was no belief in the Bengals
* The national poll overwhelmingly predicted (overwhelmingly like all 50 states) the Patriots would win - even Ohio
* Tom Brady is on fire, completing 80% + of his passes in his first 4 games
* Tom Brady is a pretty high performance QB, all things considered*
* Patriots have the number 1 offense (scoring 34 or more points their first game, highest first four game total in NFL history, and scoring in every quarter since the start of the year) and also the number 1 defense
* I don't want to perpetuate this because I'm sick of hearing about it, but the Patriots are sleazy video-taping cheaters
* The Bengals, though they occasionally show flashes of brilliance, have not been doing well lately
* Our defense is pretty bad, and our barely-there linebackers went from 4 to 2 by the first quarter through injuries
So, hopefully the Bengals spend their bye week this week getting their shit together. Chad, stop dropping balls. Carson, keep doing your thing. TJ, way to come through on the fantasy front. Marvin, hang in there and don't lose your cool. Jeff...you are way too awesome for words.
I kinda feel disappointed by the NFL lately. Here are some thoughts based on ESPN's week 5 power rankings:
1. Patriots
I already told you how good they are. Truth be told, I'm jealous. Even though they're cheaters, they're really good. I hate Tom Brady, I don't want them to be this good, and I hope they lose soon to a good team, or even better a bad team. Quit fucking talking about the '72 Dolphins.
2. Colts
I'm surrounded by Colts fans, and quite frankly I wouldn't be opposed to them being humbled just a bit. I think Peyton Manning is a goofy product placement whore, and I resist rooting for a team just because I'm here in Indiana. I wouldn't mind the Colts beating the Patriots, though.
3. Cowboys
Tony Romo, FUCK YEAH. A few people (including my favorite Cowboys fan, OSU-Eric) have dubbed him the closest thing to the next Brett Favre. I think it's still a little early in Romo's career to declare him a god, but I would be a fool to think Favre is going to be Green Bay's QB for another few decades. Anyway, after watching this (58 seconds in), I am rooting for the Tony and the Cowboys. Do me a favor, Romo, and fuck up Tom Brady's little party. Also, I found out today that Tony Romo likes hair metal.
4. Packers
Jenny's really on cloud nine with their 4-0 start, and as a [lesser] Packers fan myself, I'm happy too. Also a little jealous that "her" team is doing so much better. But mostly impressed with Favre, and happy he's breaking records left and right. What a fun QB to watch! I hope he's around for a bit longer, that GB gets a solid running game going, and they keep their record above .500. It doesn't hurt that Jenny and I play as the Packers on Madden, so I know most of the players and enjoy stomping on rookie-mode opponents.
5. Seahawks
I can get behind the Seahawks because I have a hope that Seattle will be in my future a bit more. I like Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander, but they need to play less sloppy.
6. Steelers
They lost to the Cardinals?! Still, fuck the Steelers. Get out of first place in the AFC North.
8. Jaguars
I like the Jags.
11. Ravens
Stupid Ravens. Marvin Lewis, please make our defense like theirs was.
15. Cardinals
Matt Leinart, you are gone from my fantasy team.
20. Bears
I liked it when Rex Grossman was their QB. That way it was easier to beat them.
22. Eagles
Goddamnit, McNabb. Let's get some consistency, good or bad. I really don't care, because that'll help me decide to play or bench you on my fantasy team.
23. Bengals
*sigh* C'mon, guys. 1-3? We were rated 6th in week 2. Step it up.
25. Browns
Do not want. I don't like Cleveland, I don't like Anderson (he's doing too well), and I especially don't like Brady Quinn (he's from Notre Dame).
28. Falcons
How's it feel to have a normal quarterback, guys? Maybe I'm old school, but I prefer a good rocket-armed passing game over a rushing QB anyday.
29. Saints
How disappointing. Apparently last year's playoffs appearance was a fluke. I'm still hoping you do well, Drew Brees. How about you just shoot for .500 this season? Can you do that for me?
So, Bengals have a bye week this weekend. Instead, my football action will consist of Purdue vs. Ohio State. Awesome!
* Recently found out Tom Brady is from Michigan. I don't care how good he is, I will still hate him for that.

9.06.2007
bring me some pasta!
Current Mood: so happy
This isn't breaking news or anything, but I just heard about it. Deal.
What's better than:
David, Dan, Eric, Jamie - the time for rejoicing is now!
I don't care if it makes the Big Ten conference look like more of joke than it already is, or if it hurts our revenue- the point is that a major team paid a tiny North Carolina team (from a town of 14,000) to come all the way out to "The Big House" (Michigan stadium - seats 100,000 fans), and they didn't take it seriously. Appalachian State has won their I-AA conference two years in a row and played 100% heart all game, including some explosive speed and a clutch blocked field goal at the end.
There are some fans spouting some bullshit that a I-AA team can't "win" over such a big team, that only a top 25 can "lose". As if labeling it that made any difference - the point is that Michigan expected to stomp on them, and it ended up embarrassing them in front of everybody. As an OSU fan, I couldn't be much happier with that.
On top of all of that...
So excited!
*Why the hell do I care about the Boise State Broncos all of the sudden? Two words:
Trick. Plays.
They went undefeated last year (but got screwed out of the championship game because of the rating system). I think they play well, but honestly, I'm rooting for them because they run trick plays more than once a season, like most teams. Reverses, the Statue of Liberty play, fake field goals, you name it. AWESOME.
This isn't breaking news or anything, but I just heard about it. Deal.
What's better than:
- Purdue opening their season with an easy win over Toledo, 52-24 ?
- OSU looking great without their Heisman winner, 38-6 over Youngstown St. ?
- Notre Dame falling to Georgia Tech, 33-3 ?
- Boise State* beating Weber State, 56-7 ?
David, Dan, Eric, Jamie - the time for rejoicing is now!

On top of all of that...
- Purdue plays Eastern Illinois this weekend for our first home game.
- Tonight, the NFL season kicks off with the Indianapolis Colts (who won the Superbowl last year) vs. the New Orleans Saints. This is especially big for me because everybody 'round here in Indiana is a Colts fan, but Drew Brees (Saints QB) is from Purdue.
- Lastly, this weekend is the first matchup in my fantasy football league. My team, the Lafayette Mustangs take on Bradley's, the Cincinnati Zombies.
So excited!
