Due to recent events, and for the information of those who don't know, the following it the tale of the "Alan Shepard's Prayer:"

The date was May 6th, 1961.
The United States had been upstaged by the Russians once again, with the prestige of the first man in space going to Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin weeks earlier on April 12.
Delays, setbacks, cutbacks, and saftey concerns had pushed the back the flight of America's first astronaut (originally scheduled for late March). Eager to regain lost ground, NASA pushed ahead and decided to launch America's first astronaut that early May morning. As technicians raced to complete pad checkouts, Alan Shepard waited patiently aboard the fragile and fickle Mercury-Redstone rocket. The flight itself was only to last 15 minutes, but Shepard had been waiting in the capsule for over 5 hours waiting on delay after delay.
The world watched on live television as the launch countdown proceeded. Alan Shepard, America's first astronaut, was riding a dangerous rocket on a critical mission. As he waited, he made a small but simple prayer to god:

"Dear Lord," he said
"Please don't let me fuck up."

Unaware that his microphone was set to broadcast any and all sound from the capsule to mission control, his prayer was heard loud and clear throughout the computer room in the blockhouse. Since then, this simple but powerful prayer has been adopted by astronauts and pilots alike as "The Alan Shepard's Prayer."

Amen.
