don't try this at home

Current Mood: irritable
Current Music: Nothing. No music can be played until it is checked.

It's 3:00 in the morning, I can't sleep, and it's time for me to begin my next big project:

Completely fixing, organizing, editing, and properly labeling my entire music collection.

Welcome to the life of a crazy person. I've got over 30GB of music and it's always nagged at me that because of the various...colorful sources I've utilized to acquire such a large collection, some have corrupted tags, mislabeled track numbers or artists, repeat songs, etc. I think Bradley is probably the only person I know who will understand this (and has probably done the same for his music, poor bastard with probably 60+ GB).

It is time to fix that, now. I'm going to completely check every single file in my music collection for any errors, and then clean up Winamp (reset all my play counts), and install Last.fm, which Bradley has been hounding me to join for month(s) now.

I'll be providing a truncated list of thoughts to give you some insight.

Edit- 3:08am
I've decided to scrap the artist folder system in place because it fucks up compilations and soundtracks, and instead switch to a purer single album per folder system. More folders, less confusion.

Edit- 3:09am
I just noticed that the album folders are all different. Must decide on a convention. Full Caps Album Title (Year)

Edit- 3:25am
I just noticed that a few of the albums I've checked may have incorrect genre tags. Must decide on a convention between rock/hard rock/metal/heavy metal/classic rock/classic metal...

Edit- 4:16am
I just noticed that some of the songs have different title nomenclature and almost had a panic attack. Must decide on a convention and recheck. Track Number (with the zero for numbers less than 10)_-_Full Caps Title

Note- 5:30am
Unanticipated resistance to provide uniform album titles for streamlined formatting from certain bands, namely Rush.

Thought- 6:00am
Not looking forward to Queen, Black Sabbath or Weird Al, all of whom has over 14 albums...
(Not going in alphabetical order because it's easier with compilations)

Thought- 6:43am
New speakers should be here today! Another reason to get goin' on this.

I finally crashed around 10 am, overwhelmed by how much friggin' music I have.

  1. I also understand this because I did this to my music in college. I decided on a convention and went with it (I separate my music by genre - it's how I like to listen to it). However, now that I've been "acquiring" full CDs, I have two conventions and must mix the two. So that's a project. And, I've found (after joining Last.fm at Bradley's request) that some of my songs do not have proper id3 tags - so now I have that to fix as well. I should also mention that I fixed all my id3 tags during my freshman year of college - but I lost most of that music when my computer crashed.

Ah, the life of a geek. Good luck with your craziness!

  2. Wow-- quite the play-by-play.

My next project is organizing the pictures on my computer, and I have a feeling it'll be similarly complex. You know how many pictures I have. :)

  3. Last time I asked him, Bradley had 80+ gigs of music. Not 60.

Also, I'm quite happy with my music system. It goes a little something like this... "Bradley!! Will you play the Mighty Wind soundtrack?!" or "Bradleyburger? Do you have any Imogen Heap?"

    :D

  4. Looks like I'm going to have to throw down the real answer. I have (I checked a few days ago) around 93.8 gigs of music, mostling consisting of Tom Waits, Queen, Sabbath and Megadeth.

As for the organization, I stick with a good system of each artist getting their own folder, with each album getting it's own folder in that. For soundtracks, that gets split up into "TV", "Movies", or "Games", but all soundtracks have the soundtrack genre, with album artist labled "Various Artists", then each song with it's artist.

For mulitple discs, each disc has a tag around it (ex. Johnny Cash: The Collection [Disc 1] or Johhny Cash: The Collection [Disc 2], that way the computer puts them in order.

As for a "quick-fix" program that auto-lables, it's shit-I've never found one that works. Hope that helps.

PS. Bit 'o trivia, Primus has it's own id3 tag. Cool.

  5. What category would 'Never gonna give you up' fall under?

  6. I haven't had this problem ever since the last time I lost all my music that "fell off the back of a truck on the information superhighway" and switched to completely legit sources. iTunes organizes my music for me and does a wonderful job.
