that's one tricky-ass bird

Current Mood: hungry
Current Music: "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" by Robert Palmer

I've got lots to post about, but I'm incredibly busy as of late (class, improv, work, and so on). In the interest of timing but mostly because I have class in 10 minutes, here's a chunk:

Robotic Yelling and Assassination Neohuman

Show: PSUB Activities Bonanza
Venue: behind the Purdue Memorial Union
Audience: not nearly enough passers-by
Fools: Paul, Ryan, Ashley, Benji
Comments: Once again the Fools spread the word about our shows and meetings, this time at the general-student activities fair on campus. Unfortunately, many of the people there were simply passing by and were uninterested in our flyers. Or in our short improv demo (Breakfast Club zombies attacking Gary, Indiana), where we had problems with notification, acoustics, and suggestions; improv is a comedy form that needs a sitting audience for interaction. Lesson learned, I suppose. Pressing on, we flyered it up and managed to find a few people that I thought actually wanted to come to our meetings. We also saw Japanese martial arts and medieval combat, I hugged a giant banana, and participated in general tomfoolery despite the heat. At one point PSUB reps came to our booth and wanted us to hand out flyers for them, which exemplified the way the Fools are treated by PSUB (including last-minute notification of shows, venues, and times). Still, it seemed to work out for the best.
Unofficial winner: PSUB, the student cowbird

Other improv notes:
Several shows in the works for this year, including:
*regular Friday meetings and the official Ship of Fools callout, September 9th
*PSUB Improv Night
*exam relief shows
*return performances at Hillel, Relay For Life, and other groups
*Hillenbrand Hall and Windsor Residences (so far)
*performances with "One Size Fits All" (Lafayette's improv group), the AOO, and possibly the Miami Tower Players...

Marketing at BGR, PSUB, my friends, and my job seemed to work because our season opening improv meeting was a flat-out smash hit, where several of my close friends showed up to laugh along, and were part of one of the biggest crowds I've ever seen there. I was really looking forward to it all summer and despite being rusty, it turned out to be a great show, especially for me with Two Person Story (the Scarlet Matrix!) and Three Things. Hopefully this semester we'll get s'more funny people to come to laugh, and some to recruit.

Purdue's other improv group, the Crazy Monkeys, have gone MIA. Word on the street is that they collapsed under their own weight and have factioned into pairs, leaving them contactless and lacking in the PR department.

  1. The improv competition is divided and weak.. ATTACK!

I miss Quad Days/Activity Fairs... whatever you want to call them. Where else but college can you find a fraternity competing against the pirate club for members?
