Current Music: "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton
At first this started out as a lame filler quiz post. Y'know, that type of post you do when you don't really have anything significant, witty, or particularly clever to say, but you want to put *something* into your blog. However, the idea of a particular "humor style" got me thinking.
This is not by any means meant to be an exhaustive list, so don't flood the comments with OMG YOU FORGOT THIS FUNNY THING (although comments kindly suggesting things will be well received), I present to you an approximate guide to Ryan's humor**:
Things I find funny:
*improv comedy, such as the Ship of Fools, the Tower Players, Whose Line Is It Anyway? (British and Drew Carey varieties)
*most stand up-comedy
*oversized props
*webcomics, including: Qwantz, Penny Arcade, Chugworth Academy, Alien Loves Predator, Shlock Mercenary, Questionable Content, and Ctrl+Alt+Del
*real comics: Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, The Far Side
*cartoons: The Simpsons, Family Guy, King Of The Hill
*classic SNL, especially Weekend Update and Norm MacDonald
*TV Shows: Malcom In The Middle, Just Shoot Me!, Grounded For Life, King of Queens, Becker, Seinfeld
*internet humor: random flash cartoons, Homestar Runner, ebaumsworld, ZUG, Spamusement, ytmnd, collegehumor
*humorous t-shirts
*Tux, the Linux penguin
*movies: Wayne's World, Liar Liar, Happy Gilmore, Anchorman, Kevin Smith films, Austin Powers, Chevy Chase "Vacation" movies
*clever parodies: Weird Al, AOO, Leslie Nielson, Trey Parker and Matt Stone
*British comedy: Are You Being Served?, Monty Python, Shaun of the Dead
*intelligent humor, satire, parody, irony
*most non sequiturs
*schadenfreude, sometimes
*extremely delicious irony (see Dr. Atkins dying of a heart attack)
*claymation: Gumby, Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit
*mascots
*terribly bad old old old movies (anything with Mothra, basically) and Mystery Science Theatre
*lame and corny jokes, pickup lines, comebacks, and puns (and clever ones, too!)
*lame and corny names, such as a boats named "Gone Fission", "Boaty Call", "Bow Movement", "Knottie Buoy", or "Pier Pressure"
*nerd and science humor
*Jack Black
*Bob and Tom comedy
*that moment in Sin City where the guy gets harpooned and goes "Hey...are you guys seeing this?"
Things I do not find funny at all:
*clowns, midgets, or monkeys
*babies: babies talking, adults dressing as babies, babies advertising for Quizznos...babies doing anything but acting like babies, basically
*marionettes
*most Adult Swim, especially Aqua Teen Hunger Force
*men getting hit in the family jewels
*most toilet humor
*gratuitous vulgarity or foul language (usually)
*dumb blondes including, but certainly not limited to: Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Reese Witherspoon, Christina Aguilera, Anna Nicole Smith, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie
*general sketch comedy, especially Blue Collar Comedy tour and MadTV
*celebrities pretending to be comedians
*Jackie Chan, Jon Lovitz, George Lopez
*talk shows
*Jerry Springer
*reality TV
*Will and Grace (I'm not a homophobe, really. It's just that gay jokes on this show aren't funny. "Hey, I'm gay!" *canned laughter*)
*Everybody Loves Raymond (Again, how the hell do people like this show, much less nominate it for awards? This is just a half an hour of people screaming and bitching at each other)
**Paul...this *might* be a good place to start our list of required study material for the Ship of Fools, for the record

You mean you actually remembered that discussion? Shoot, now I might actually have to put together the List of Things You Should Know in Order to Understand the Various References We Make During Everyday Speech.
ReplyDeleteThere is one thing in this world which is definately not funny. And that is Jay Leno.
ReplyDeleteDoes Dilbert still exist? We used to get the TV cartoon in australia. But it got cancelled. I still have dilbert as my phone logo
ReplyDeleteUm, the Dilbert cartoon ran for a few shows, but then was pulled. The books and comic still are published, though.
