My dad and my brother just bought guitars and are going to start lessons soon. I really like guitars and think they're cool...but I'm not a guitar player, even though we all know playing the guitar is one of the ultimate chick magnets. I like the classic rock sound (one or two electric or acoustic guitars, one bass guitar, a drum set, and the occasional keyboard/synth.) and I'm comfortable with my drum and vocal skills (said with a chuckle). With that, I present to you the 6 cardinal rules of the guitar:
1. You must give your guitar a woman's name and refer to her as such.
2. You must hold the guitar firmly, but gently.
3. You must not play your guitar. You make love to it.
4. You must practice regularly and develop a signature style.
5. You must pay respect to the five demigods of the guitar: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Brian May, and the guitarists of Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
6. A guitar is a delicate, attractive, expensive musical instrument. You treat it with care, love, and respect...or break it over an amp while stickin' it to the man.
Let's see...what else did I do today? I played some disc golf and started working on long-distance driving and technique with my drivers. Oh yeah, I stepped on a thorn branch on the 10th hole and jammed the stick through the bottom of my shoe AND INTO MY FOOT. I might have a thorn stuck in the sole of my foot- we'll have to see once the swelling goes down. That's what I get for getting up before noon, ruining a perfectly good afternoon of disc golf and a perfectly good pair of shoes.
Woke up in a cold sweat this morning at 8 o'clock because I had a nightmare where I was flying my Cessna 152 over the airport, downwind on Runway 22 on final.....and the engine quit. I froze and completely forgot what to do. In a blind panic, I randomly started throwing switches and levers. It's been too long since I've been in a cockpit. I think I'm gonna start reviewing all my old notes and training books especially since it's been (*counts* late December, surgery, January, February, March, April, May, graduation, 18th birthday, June, now it's July) more than seven months since I last flew and the guitars have made me want to pick up where I left off. Based on my doctors appointment (Monday) I might be able to go for one last flight before I leave for Purdue. We'll just have to see what sort of aviation adventures I get into in West Lafayette.

My parents want me to get my pilot's license (and have for about...oh, four years now). In fact, I do too. It's just so expensive.
ReplyDeleteOh, and thanks for the spacy info. Enjoyed the bit about Saturn's rings, didn't know that.
The Magniloquent Megalomaniac
I think guitars rock, with that said - i cannot play a damn note if my life depended on it. But i agree with you on the chick magnet part, and it goes both ways. I'll marry the next girl who walks through my door guitar in hand. As for a name of my guitar, i'm gonna have to go with either Lana, or Mary-Jane my two leading ladies who happen to be taken by Superman and Spidey - dang i'm a geek, but you say no to a damsel in distress..
