Happy Fourth of July,
my favorite holiday
the most secular holiday
the anniversary of our great nation's independence
One of the things that accompanies growing up is adjusting to the changes of traditions that were once set in stone. For example, when I was younger, 4th of Julys were spent at Ault Park in Mt. Lookout watching the Rozzi firworks, with me, mom, dad, sister, and brother. No other option was even remotely considered. Once sis left for college, however, family traditions started to fracture, and I'm trying to adjust as best as I can. Last year, we didn't have sis, mom and dad fought, and *sigh* I spent the day with Kristen and her family. This year, I spent my Fourth of July weekend with David, Eric, and Dan. Yay for friends!
Over the four day marathon (from Thursday evening to Sunday evening),
Finally got around to watching The Matrix. I thought it was a neat idea/story/concept, but the fight scenes and "innovative" things within it now are just lame and spoofed, a sort of "been there/seen that" attitude. Not to mention the DVD kept skipping, and David, Eric, and Dan turned the movie into Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Saw Spiderman 2, and was genuinely impressed. Couldn't find anything really wrong with it...it was action filled, appropriate and well-timed humor, looked great, sentimental when needed, and close to comic lore. ^_^ Yay for good comic book adaptations! I did realize that I'm pretty damn close to being the next Doc Ock. I've already got half the hardware bolted to my spine...all I need is four of those mechanical arms. I can't wait for the next Spidermans, incl. Rhino, the Hobgoblin, Lizard, and Venom. Yes, I'm a superhero/comics geek.
Movies to see:
Matrix 2 and 3
Equilibrium
Dodgeball
Shrek 2?
Aliens Vs. Predator
The Village
I, Robot (prepare for a massive rant)
Sunday evening included mass pyrotechnics. Mom left, and Dad took Bradley to Larry (Dad's old pal)'s house. So I visited the Brentlinger estates, where neighbors are friendly, nice, generous, and not threatening or druggies. We lit a couple of dozen firecrackers and bottle rockets (no sparklers?), lit some of my space shuttle rocket-cars, and I burned my thumb. The best part of the evening was when David's neighbor brought out some very big mortar fireworks and launched them- very loud, very big, very bright. The trouble started when they (neighbor and David's dad, the ADULT RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFETY) set up two. They lit both, and I watched the first firework shoot about 100 feet into the air. I heard a six-person simultaneous "Oh, GOD!" and out of the corner of my eye, everbody took several steps back. Suddenly, a massive green and white explosion engulfed my vision and I braced against a wave of heat and sparks (sorta like Ness on SSB:M). The first mortar launch had knocked the tube for the second one over, and pointed it right at me. This now marks the third time I seriously almost killed myself with rockets/fireworks (the first was the homebuilt rocket, the "Mean Machine," the second time was when I was lit on fire by a roman candle by Justin Stout on New Year's Eve, 2000). I guess that's why they call me the Rocket Man.
Decided to start up a clan with the guys to play Medal of Honor on our new computer that can actually run it. It'll give me something to do in the evenings, and might help keep me in touch with the OSU crew later down the road. I'm going to attempt to pick up the game/expansion/manual/guide and maybe a headset tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I'm Mr. Pink.
"Porkchop Sandwiches!"
Generally hanging out with Eric, Dan, and David. Playing XBox, watching movies, TV (I Love the 70's, NASCAR), stupid but hilarious GI Joe animations, etc. Eric and I built a fort in David's basement (old-school style) and blocked virtually all foot traffic in and out for half of a day. The four of us are also considering making a homemade movie, possibly live action, possibly using Star Wars toys. There, I said it.
Notes
*need more $$$ (computer games, movies, and gas)
*Eric and Dan owe me several digital pictures
*doctor's appt. on July 12th (must find out if I can donate blood yet)
*Dad's B-day on July 14th, must get present (CD?)
*mid July- Purdue stuff (roomate, bills, housing, etc.) and AP scores (if I have to wait for my late testing, I'm gonna be torqued)
*July 17 & 18th: Vectren Dayton Air Show/REO Speedwagon concert(oddly, I've never been to an air show or a music concert before)
*must use free Lindner Red's tickets before I leave for Purdue
*talk to GM about my idea for a new Hummer commercial

Hey, kid! I'm a computa.
ReplyDeleteAh, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a superb show...quite reaches out to me in my intellect and sarcasm lobes.
ReplyDeleteDarbie Balls.
I just laugh non-stop through that show.
ReplyDeleteSo you liked Spiderman 2 then?? Must see this movie.. But don't see Shrek 2, what a waste of time. But thats just me, i hate everything Shrek i even hate the colour green now!
ReplyDeleteI think family traditions is awesome. I remember having to go to stupid places like the gardens or the lakes to do some lame thing like walking or bloody badmington. I hated it at the time and would rather have stayed at home. But looking back on it now, i think they were the best times i've spent with my family and i only wish i would have allowed myself to have a little more fun. Times like that don't come around that often these days so have fun now while you still can.
